A joint meeting of the ruling CPN (Maoist Centre) and Nepali Congress and the protesting political parties affiliated with the Federal Alliance on Tuesday struck an agreement to extend the tenure of the Local Body Restructuring Commission (LBRC) for more two weeks. The decision comes at a time when all major political parties including the ruling Maoist Centre, NC and opposition CPN-UML are opposing the proposal of the Commission to decrease the numbers of local units. The commission is mandated to determine the number and borders of village councils, municipal council and special, protected or autonomous regions to be formed within a year of its recommendation. The meeting agreed that the commission will submit a report related to the restructuring of local units by August-end and by then, political leaderships of major parties would reach a common consensus on it. Meanwhile at the meeting, Prime Minister and CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal said the government was committed to holding local body elections within eight months. He also assured to amend and implement the constitution. Vice-Chairman of CPN (UML), Bhim Rawal, said that his party proposed in the meeting that the incumbent government should give continuity to the activities of the erstwhile government as KP Sharma Oli-led government has made preparation to hold local elections by November. It was necessary to hold all three-level elections in the slated time to implement the new constitution and to institutionalize the gained achievements, he added.Similarly, Spokesperson of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Pampha Bhusal, said that the Prime Minister put forth a proposal of extending deadline for the preparation of local bodies’ election and report of the Commission for two weeks.
