World’s poorest President

Leader of Uruguayan Jose Mujicaa has been dubbed as the ‘poorest president in the world’. He barely claims his salary so he has no chance of being caught fiddling his expenses or paying a clever account to avoid taxes. To embrace the trappings of power that come with being the country’s figurehead, the 77 year old has refused to adapt his lifestyle. The leader continues to reside at his ramshackle farm situated a few miles away from the country’s capital city of Montevideo as he turned down the invitation to live at a luxurious grace and favour residence owned by the state. The pair of police officers who stand guard at the end of his heavily tractor-rutted dirt track are the only sign that the country’s leader is at home. 90% of his monthly salary is given to charity. It is equivalent to £7,500 and he is left with only £485 a month to live off.. He is also a part time farmer and his tired-looking Volkswagen Beetle and his three-legged dog Manuela are his most valuable possessions.
